Abstract Patchouli ( Pogostemom cablin Benth) belongs to the family Lamiaceae and is native to south Asia. This plant has become a focus of the food industry for its essential oil and hence it has been selected as an intercrop with high return support to farmers in India. Patchouli essential oil is in great demand and has extensive application in flavor, perfumery, cosmetic, luxury products, the food and beverage industries, and the pharmaceutical industry. The nature and versatile applications of essential oil highlight the importance in the global market. As a commercial grower, India has the edge over others for global patchouli oil market with focused programs for promoting new cultivation strategies of patchouli plant and, with its vast geographical area and diverse climate, is expected to become the second largest producer of patchouli oil in the world.
