Crystal chemistry and microhardness of yttria-stabilized ZrO2(YSZ) doped with WO3

Abstract The investigation of the solid solution type in dependence on the tungsten concentration and some optical and mechanical characteristics of the system Zr x Y 1−x O 2− x 2 − WO 3 has shown: (a) the structure model of the solid solution is in a good agreement with the measured physical properties; (b) W 6+ ions enter into the interstitial positions at 0.1 wt.% WO 3 ; (c) both interstitial and substitutional sites are occupied by W 6+ ions in the structure at the higher dopant concentrations; (d) the dependence of the lattice parameter, defect concentration, microhardness and optical absorption on the impurity concentration indicates an anomalous course at 0.1 wt.% WO 3 .
