Mapping of volcanic apron and the upper crust between Gran Canaria and Tenerife (Canary Islands) with seismic reflection profiling

1996
During the Volcanic Island Clastic Apron Project (VICAP), south of the Canary Islands, a total of 700 line-km multichannel seismic profiles were acquired. Two prominent reflectors (A and C) were observed alternately: A is the top of the volcanic apron. C, at a depth of about 5.8 s (two way traveltime twt), can be correlated to reflector R7, a marker dated mid-Miocene (16 Ma) at the DSDP site 397. The deepest reflection (E) in the basin was observed at 8 s (twt), which is an atypical oceanic basement.
