A model for the non‐bridging oxygen center in fused silica

A model for the electronic and geometric structure of the non-bridging oxygen defect center in fused silica is presented. The structure of the center is determined by the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, which appears as a forming of an additional oxygen-oxygen bond between the non-bridging oxygen atom and another oxygen atom from the same silicon-oxygen tetrahedron.
