Influence of Na-Montmorillonite on Phenolic Resin Properties for Wood Adhesive

Addition of small percentage of Na-montmorillonite(Na-MMT) could improve water resistance of thermosetting phenol-formaldehyde(PF) resin used as adhesive for plywood and particleboard,but had no effect on dry performance.X-ray diffraction(XRD) indicated that Na-MMT could not completely exfoliate when mixed in small proportions in PF resins.MALDI-TOF spectra confirmed that tested phenolic resin was three-dimensional and intercalation was difficult.Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) indicated that Na-MMT had positive effect on the curing of PF resin.
