Research at the intersection of strategic management and organizational theory has begun to explore the implications of formal politics for organizations. Relatively disparate streams of research in political psychology and corporate political activity have shown that organizations are affected by, and, in turn, affect politics in the United States. This symposium aims to integrate and extend this conversation by including four empirical studies focusing on 1) how political institutions influence firm decision-making by providing the basis for enduring political beliefs of corporate elites, and prevailing ideologies in organizations, and how firms, in turn, seek to influence political institutions; 2) how politics and political ideologies are deeply connected with a range of organizational decisions and outcomes, including employee departure, CEO succession, employment practices, and social movement boycotts.
