Simultaneous examination of capsule endoscopy and colonscopy in diagnosing obscure gastrointestinal bleeding:analysis of 100 cases

[Objective] To investigate the value of capsule endoscope(CE) in the diagnosing obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(OGIB) and the significance of the combined use of CE and colonoscopy in etiological.[Methods] One hundred patients with OGIB [59 male/41 female,average age(50.6±17.9) years] were enrolled in this study.CE was performed with the omom capsule endoscope and colonoscope after being examined by the CE and colonoscopy,and according to the results obtained from the CE,36 patients had undergone laparoscopy-colonoscopy or operative exploration.[Results] Among the 100 patients,100(98%) had completed the CE-colonoscopy examination successfully.Capsule retention occurred in 2 patients of the 36 patients performed laparoscopy-colonoscopy/or operative exploration after CE-colonoscopy.The detecting rate and diagnostic yield were 98%(n =98) and 4 cases with ileoceal cancer 4%(n =4).[Conclusions] In OGIB,CE could provide a high diagnostic yield.It may be used as the first choice of diagnostic screening device OGIB,CE when combined with colonoscopy can in crease the diagnostic yield of ileoceal cancer.
