기호학적 해석을 통한 리노베이션 된 입면의 의미 고찰 - 인천 중구 근대건축물 중심으로 -

2020
From the 1960s Post-Modernist era in architecture, the purity and simplicity pursued during modernism (1920-30s) was pointed out as fiction and raised a ‘crisis of meaning.’ Accordingly, linguistic theory was introduced as an important framework to analyze the creation and acceptance of meaning. Among these theories, semiotics and structuralism present a view that architecture itself does not have its own meaning, but that meaning can be developed through social agreements (Kate Nesbitt). In buildings, social agreements acting as a convention are called a 'code.’ Among the elements of a building, the image formed by the facade is not a simple visual medium, but shares the historical, cultural, and social background within it as a ‘code’ that constantly communicates with its viewers. The renewal zone of Jung-gu, Incheon, the target site of this research, focus on renovating facade and strongly reveal a ‘pluralistic character’ with complex meanings. This situation places importance on the value of pluralism, and is positioned as an extension of the trend of the Post-Modernist era. Currently, the image of this urban area, reconstructed through facade-focused renovation, is considered a method of urban regeneration based mainly on the economic logic of tourism, leading to criticism by architects and historians. However, one can re-examine the facade through the linguistic idea of a ‘sign’ that communicate with people from a cultural point of view, opening up a new possibility of analyzing their implied ‘code.’ In this study, I attempt to decipher the code implied by the renovated facade as a symbol, analyzing how the code is transformed and applied to enable or achieve its communicative status. By expanding and studying the elevation within the target site from the smallest unit (material, composition, etc.) to the distance unit (street, block), the intention is to read the context of the city from an integrated perspective and present a new interpretation and discourse on the values ??and limitations of the renovated facade in historical districts.
