The brittleness of gelatin layers is changed by the addition of neutral salts (NaCl and CaCl 2 ) to the gelatin. The brittleness correlates with the conoscopically measured tilt angle in the narrow concentration range between 0 and 2% salt admixture. The tilt angle describes the stereoscopic orientation of the ordered gelatin molecules in the layer
