In a method for preventing collisions of vehicles, the surroundings of a vehicle 2 and movement variables of the vehicle 2 are first detected by means of sensors 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5. A right-of-way disregard measure and a collision risk measure are derived from the output signals of the sensors. A hazard level is determined from a combination of right of way disregard measure and collision risk measure. Depending on the hazard level determined, steps to reduce the risk of collision are finally initiated.
