THE COMPARISON OF THE EFFECT OF DISCOVERY LEARNING AGAINTS COOPERATIVE INTEGRATED READING AND COMPOSITION ON READING COMPREHENSION OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXTS

This research aims to find out whether or not Discovery Learning is more effective than Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) on stu d en ts‟ reading comprehension of descriptive text. This research employed a quasi experimental design. The sample consisted of the students of two first grade classes from MIPA (Math and ScIence) majors. One class was taught with Discovery Learning technique, while another class with the CIRC technique. The instrument was a reading test. The findings of this research revealed that Discovery learning technique was significantly more effective than CIRC in improving students‟ reading comprehension in general and in various on ( literal, inferential and vocabulary ) aspects. From the result, it is concluded that Discovery Learning is more effective than CIRC technique in improving reading comprehension of descriptive text. It is suggested that English teachers need to apply discovery learning technique in the instruction of reading comprehension of descriptive text.
