THREE BODY BREAK-UP OF 12C BY 52 MeV PROTONS

1972
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses three body breakup of 12 C by 52 MeV protons. Many of the excited states of 12 C are reported to decay into three alpha particles. The three body breakup reaction of 12 C has been studied by bombarding a self-supporting carbon target of 1.5 mg/cm 2 thick with 52 MeV protons that were extracted from the University of Tokyo (INS) synchrocyclotron. A proton and an alpha particle were detected in coincidence with two counter telescopes. The chapter illustrates summed energy spectrum obtained from a two-dimensional energy spectrum of a proton and alpha particle emitted in coincidence. The summed energy spectrum shows that the reaction leaving 8 Be in the first excited state prevails and the one leaving 8 Be in its ground state seldom occurs.
