Acute appendicitis due to Strongyloides stercoralis

1998
A case of acute appendicitis due to Strongyloides stercoralis is reported. This nematode is endemic in the tropics. The clinical manifestations range from total absence of symptoms to potentially fatal toxic syndromes. Although abdominal pain is frequently seen, only 9 cases of appendicular infections by Strongyloides stercoralis presenting as acute appendicitis are reported in the literature. The mortality rate in immunodeficient patients necessitates knowledge of the disease, its diagnosis and effective treatment.
