PLASMA LIPOPROTEINS IN HYPOTHYROID PATIENTS

1981
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a study to investigate plasma lipoproteins in hypothyroid patients. In this study, 20 female patients with hypothyrosis with onset below the age of 50 and duration exceeding four years were examined. The group included patients with spontaneous hypothyrosis and hypothyrosis after strumectomy and after radiolysis of the toxical thyroid gland. The diagnosis was determined on the basis of clinical features and laboratory examinations including T-4 test. These patients received the clinically optimal doses of hormones without the signs of hyperfunction. After a 12-h fasting period, blood was collected by the puncture of the cubital vein and added to EDTA solution. By the ultracentrifugation of the plasma on the ultracentrifuge 15–40 Beckman, rotor SW 50.1, lipoprotein fractions were obtained. In these fractions as well as in full plasma, the content of triglycerides, cholesterol, phospholipids, and protein were determined. The chapter illustrates the very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) concentration of the hypothyroid patients and the control group of healthy women. No significant alterations were found in VLDL concentration of patients in comparison with the control group.
