Synthesis and Characterization of Some New Cyanonitrosyl Complexes of Chromium (I) with Nicotine and Related Ligands

1986
Abstract Some novel cyanonitrosyl complexes of monovalent chromium, formed by the interaction of K3(CrNO(CN)5]. H2O with nicotine (NICO), nicotinamide (NICAM), isonicotinamide (INAM), N-methylnicotinamide (N-MeNICAM), nicotinic acid (NA), isonicotinic acid (INA), 2-aminonicotinic acid (2-AmNA) and picolinic acid (PA) have been isolated in the solid state. The compounds have been characterised on the basis of elemental analyses, magnetic measurements, electron spin resonance and infrared spectral studies. The compound with nicotine is of the empirical formula [CrNO(CN)2(NICO)2] whereas the complexes with the other ligands have been formulated as [CrNO(CN)2(L)2(H2O)] (L [dbnd] NICAM, INAM, N-MeNICAM, NA, INA, 2-AmNA or PA). Suitable structures have been proposed for the complexes. Chromium(I) has a low-spin d5 configuration in all these complexes.
