Roman Architectural Complex at Stari Šematorij in Danilo (Rider) – The Issue of Function

2017
The main aim of the article is to reevaluate previous interpretations regarding the function of the Roman architectural complex at the locality of Stari Sematorij in the village of Danilo (Roman Rider). The complex in question is subjected to thorough analysis, including its later adaptations of the Late Antique and Medieval period. Different from prevailing scientific considerations, the complex is observed as one of the Roman road stations of the cursus publicus (the state-run transportation service), that, as such, could have played a significant administrative role and influenced the status of the settlement, as well as its further development. In that respect, some other issues related to Roman Rider are discussed – the one of the “duality” of the settlement and its administration, as well as of its spatial organization during longer time period, together with the issue of the establishment of an early-Christian diocese on its territory.
