Ultrasound Beam Characterization Through Real Time Visualization with Schlieren Imaging

2020
A self-contained system that generates Schlieren images was used to visualize beam profiles of an ultrasonic testing (UT) transducer, and to visualize beam interactions within transparent solid materials with certain defects. Through experimentation, distinguishable features of the beam interaction within the transparent solid material could be visually characterized and correlated with the associated A-scans, thus enabling further areas of benchmark studies for probe design and simulation models.
