Jazyk v emigraci. Germanismy v jazyce čechoamerických periodik
2014
The contribution is focused on the language of Czech immigrants in the USA in the period
starting with their arrival in the USA in the 1850s till the 1920s. The description of the Czech
language in America is based on analyses of immigrant periodicals printed in Czech. The
analyses proved that the language of Czech immigrants in the USA had been different from the
language used in their home country, mainly as regards the use of conservative grammar,
frequent Germanisms, especially grammatical, and emerging Americanization. The contribution
also attempts to answer the question about the causes of these differences.
