Particular Aspects of the Management of Diabetes in Children

1989
Children are different and behave differently from adults. They undergo continuous developmental changes both physically and emotionally, and this is reflected in their behavior. Children are not self-sufficient. They depend on their family and are strongly influenced by their immediate surroundings, i.e., siblings and peers. Any change in their well-being will become a problem of the whole family and extended milieu such as school and friends. This fact is especially exemplified in the case of diabetes mellitus, a serious chronic disease with many possible acute exacerbations. With few exceptions, diabetes in childhood is of autoimmune etiology but has strong genetic and possibly environmental components [1, 2].
