Self-Settlement of Syrian Refugees in Northern Jordan: a comparative study of Zaatari Refugee Camp and Azraq City

The contribution will focus on the settlement patterns of two families of Syrian refugees in Jordan. Based on interviews and architectural mapping, we will trace the evolution of their housing in two different contexts: in the refugee camp of Zaatari and in a periurban space in Azraq. The objective is to analyze the determinants of refugee settlement patterns in spaces with different constraints. On the one hand, in a refugee camp where the humanitarian government impose rules for the implementation of its action and on the other a settlement in an informal urban space. We will highlight refugees' active contribution in the settlement process, focusing on the role they play in the development of their housing and how they adapt to constraints (legal, economic, etc.). We will present a mapping of the evolution of their house since their settlement in Jordan, coupled with their migratory itinerary and their biographies retracing their own refugees' experience.
