Deformation Characteristics of Fault Structures on the Northern Fringe of Qaidam Basin

2004
Regional structural settings of Qaidam basin is analyzed. Characteristics of both macroscopical and microcosmic deformations of faults on the northern fringe of Qaidam basin have been researched. The result shows that the northern fringe of Qaidam basin is characterized by fault structures of different directions and different combinations under the action of plate movement. Strikes of these faults mainly are NWW and NEE, being in good accordance with directions of regional structural lines. Research on characteristics of macro-structures and micro structures shows that the common feature of these fault structures is the main character of compression, so the thrust and nappe of different structures are formed. The fault structures often have a characteristic of multiple phases and superimposed deformation. The direction and quality of tectonic stress is basically the same for different phases and reflects a long time and continued action of compressive stress in nearly NS direction. However, there exists certain differences in strength of stress and deforming environment of faults.
