The Design Concept Of Low Cost And Volume Switched-capacitor DC-DC Resonant Converter

2021
This paper presents research results and demonstration of a simple and cost effective implementation of the DC-DC switched-capacitor (SC) converter. The benefits of the design results from the elimination of external heat-sink, and resonant inductor as well as an increase of capacitance of the switched capacitor by parasitic capacitance. It allows for reduction of the number of connectors, mechanical parts, and switched capacitors. The implementation of the converter becomes significantly simplified, which is demonstrated in this paper, where the required parameters are achieved by the use of multilayer PCB. Furthermore, the converter composed of an air-based resonant choke, high temperature switches, diodes, capacitors and PCB material allows for its operation in high ambient temperature or with high temperature increment. The paper demonstrates the design concept and the achieved parameters of the converter which reaches 97% of efficiency, 700 Watt of the output power and 9,33 W/dm3 power density. Heat distribution in the converter is analyzed in two cases of ambient temperature. It is demonstrated that the concept is favorable for operation at a higher temperature of ambient.
