Electrophoretic deposition of nano-scaled zirconia powders prepared by laser evaporation

The application of electrophoretic shaping to nano-sized t-ZrO 2 powders prepared by laser evaporation was investigated. In addition, two commercially available zirconia powders were included in the experiments for comparison. The electrokinetic behavior of aqueous powder suspensions was characterized by measuring the electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA). By electrophoretic deposition from aqueous laser powder suspensions, green bodies with a very homogeneous particle packing could be even produced without dispersants. The green bodies showed a monomodal pore size distribution with pore radii ca. 12...14 nm.
