A Marauder's Map for the IoT Edge

2019
In the Harry Potter novels, the magical map known as the Marauder's Map tracks the whereabouts of people in and around Hogwarts Castle, displaying their names, locations, and paths of marauding. What if such a map were realizable in the real world, customized to provide a window into any space within which you might wander? What if it was augmented to show in real-time any co-located devices and data that might be flowing through the space, since the number of connected sensors and devices (that make up the Internet of Things or IoT) has far surpassed the number of people on Earth and the amount of data these devices generate for measurement and monitoring is staggering? In this paper, we explore the usage of these newfound capabilities, discuss their implications for privacy, assess the maturity of existing IoT technologies to meet these challenges, identify open research topics that merit consideration, and posit philosophical questions to be answered on route to bringing the Marauder's Map to life.
