The Teaching of Reading

OF THE RESEARCH reports in the field of reading summarized in The Journal of Educa tional Research in the last four decades, no sub area has seen such interest as "The Teaching of Reading." Since Professor Gray published his first Review in 1933, this area has consistently re mained a sub-category in the Review. The Teach ing of Reading?in some years called the Pedagogy of Reading?has been an "umbrella" category under which a wide variety of research studies has been discussed. More than forty sub-topics have appeared in the Review within The Teaching of Reading section. Some sub-topics have been included in nearly every issue, while others were present for only a few years. Many of them have been renamed through the years. It is apparent that the assign ment of particular studies to certain categories by the various reviewers has been quite arbitrary. The focus of this article is upon eleven broad sub-topics that are subsumed under the Teaching of Reading. Interest in these eleven areas has per sisted throughout the forty-one years of the re view. Following a discussion pointing out trends and some significant studies in each of the eleven categories, a few other areas of reading pedagogy are briefly discussed.
