Moisture dependent physical properties of pigeon pea grains

2013
Different important physical properties of pigeon pea grains (BDN-2) were determined at five different moisture content levels of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% dry basis (d.b.). With an increase of moisture content from 10 to 50% (d.b.), the average value of triaxial dimensions of pigeon pea such as length, width and thickness increased from 6.04 to 6.45, 5.40 to 5.72 and 4.61 to 4.79 mm, respectively. The bulk density and true density decreased from 0.865 to 0.777 g/cm3and 1.346 to 1.295 g/cm3, respectively, while the porosity and angle of repose increased from 35.84 to 40% and 30.01 to 39.45°, respectively as the moisture content increased from 10 to 50% (d.b.). The values of static coefficient of friction against galvanised, plywood and glass surface were found to be 0.46 to 0.68, 0.53 to 0.69 and 0.46 to 0.75, respectively.
