Pneumatic reduction of intussusception using equipment readily available in the hospital.

2006
IntroductionIntussusception is the invagination of one portion ofintestine (intussusceptum) into the contiguous distalsegment (intussuscipien), the most common beingileocolic intussusception. It is the most common causeofbowel obstruction in the infant-toddlerage group. In Malaysia, hydrostatic reduction of intussusceptionusing barium solution has been the practice since the1980's. A paper on the early experience of bariumreduction at Hospital Kuala Lumpurbetween 1986-1989reported a success rate of 47%'. Earlier success ratesfor hydrostatic reduction were reported to be between40-50% and more recently, 70-85% success rates havebeen reported
