Cross sectional study ofeffects ofdrinking greenteaon cardiovascular andliver diseases

1995
Objective-To investigate theassociation between consumption ofgreen teaandvarious serummarkers ina Japanese population, withspecial reference topreventive effects ofgreenteaagainst cardiovascular disease anddisorders oftheliver. Design-Cross sectional study. Setting-Yoshimi, Japan. Subjects-1371 menagedover40yearsresident inYoshimiandsurveyed ontheirliving habits including daily consumption ofgreentea.Their peripheral bloodsamples weresubjected toseveral biochemical assays. Results-Increased consumption ofgreen teawas associated withdecreased serumconcentrations oftotal cholesterol (Pfortrend<0.001) andtriglyceride (Pfortrend=0.02) andan increased proportion ofhighdensity lipoprotein cholesterol together withadecreased proportion oflowandvery lowlipoprotein cholesterols (Pfortrend=0-02), whichresulted inadecreased atherogenic index(P fortrend=0.02). Moreover, increased consumption ofgreen tea, especially morethan10cupsaday, was related todecreased concentrations ofhepatological markers inserum, aspartate aminotransferase (Pfor trend=0.06), alanine transferase (Pfortrend=0.07), andferritin (Pfortrend=0002). Conclusion-The inverse association between consumption ofgreen teaandvarious serummarkers showsthatgreenteamayactprotectively against cardiovascular disease anddisorders oftheliver.
