IN 1960 Wilson and Mikity1 reported the sporadic occurrence of a new form of respiratory disease in premature infants, characterized by an insidious course of hyperpnea and cyanosis, progressive pulmonary and cardiac symptoms and striking x-ray evidence of a diffuse pulmonary infiltrate. Since the isolation of the prototype ECHO virus Type 19 in 19552 , 3 only 2 cases of the association of that virus with human illness have been recorded,4 , 5 neither of which was fatal.
