Painful Syndromes: Mechanisms of Nociception and Antinociception

2018
Traditionally, two main concepts are considered in the views on morphophysiological bases of pain. The first concept suggests that the skin has pain receptors, from which begin the specific afferent pathways to the brain, where there are special centers for the treatment of pain information. Another concept put forward by the Goldscheider is a non-specific pain theory, or a theory of intensity, a «pattern» according to which any sensory stimulus that reaches a certain intensity can cause pain. That is, specific pain structures do not exist, and pain is the result of a combination of thermal, mechanical and other sensory stimuli.
