In this contribution introductory the problem of the penetration of fire smoke into staircases is represented by fires in underground railway stations. Different models for the computation of the smoke expansion are represented and endangerment criteria are defined. The application of KOB-RA-3D for the evaluation of the fire hazard (endangerment to persons by the smoke) is described by fire simulation for underground stations of Hamburger Hochbahn. By the example of the underground station Emilienstrasse in Hamburg the results of the fire simulation are represented. Finally construction examples of smoke exhaust venting equipment in underground stations are pointed out.
