Mathematical Creative Thinking Process on Gifted Students from Acceleration Classes of Junior High School based on Adversity Quotient

2021
This study explored the creative thinking process of gifted students based on the adversity quotient (AQ). This study was carried out on 32 students from acceleration classes of grade VII junior high school in Tasikmalaya in the 2018/2019 academic year. Verbal data were collected by using the think-loud method which was supported by unstructured interviews and video-visual recording to obtain complete data. The instrument was given to students consecutively with unlimited time so that the answers from students were complete and clear. Besides, it was also to make all students get the same opportunity. The results indicated that 24 students had creative thinking level or were classified as climbers, 3 students had critical thinking level or were classified as campers-climbers, 1 student had basic thinking level or was classified as campers, and 4 students had a thinking level that was equivalent to creative thinking level but they were not included in this level because they had obtained the material on the test previously. In this study, the process of thinking was revealed using an adaptation of Piaget's theory. Therefore, it was revealed that students with creative thinking or climbers underwent accommodation on problems, relationships, and strategies. Students with critical thinking experienced assimilation on problems, relationships, and strategies. Meanwhile, students with basic thinking or quitters did not experience disequilibrium.
