Study of the main character's struggle in defending Umuaro and traditional belief against the British influence in Chinua Achebe Arrow of God

Being curious about how Achebe revealed and developed his idea of African traditional belief in the modem way, the thesis writer decided to study the male character, Ezeulu, who is a leader in Umuaro, in Achebe's Arrow of God. The thesis writer wants to discuss Ezeulu's reasons, and conflicts experienced by when he is Ezeulu the leader of Umuaro against the British influence. The literary theory used in characterization and conflict. The discussion analyzes Ezeulu's reasons and a lot of conflicts in Ezeulu's struggle which have happened during the coming of the British in Umuaro. Finally, this study concludes the result of Ezeulu's struggle in defending his belief and Umuaro against the British influence. In the end of Ezeulu's struggle, Ezeulu wonders of his belief because of the incident which has caused the death of his lovely son, Obika during the ritual ceremony in Amalu's funeral. The death of Obika lessen Ezeulu's faith toward his god, although at first, Ezeulu always adores Ulu as his adorable god, and Ezeulu always believes in Ulu's power and influence. The Umuaro people believe in Christianity.
