Literacy, Tradition and Progress: Enrolment and Retention in an African Rural Literacy Programme

This book reports on research into a program which combined adult literacy education with indigenous education methods. The study was carried out in the Ido local government area of Oyo State in Nigeria over a 17-month period beginning in November 1989. The objectives of this research were: to identify alternative strategies for literacy promotion; to provide a solution to the intractable problem of non-growth; to reduce the pattern of wastage and learner apathy; and to promote learner empowerment as literacy’s ultimate goal. The chapters are: Introduction; Theoretical framework; Research methodology; Literacy research and learning activities; Results, recommendations and follow-up issues.
