Development of a Multifilament PIT ${\rm V}_{3}{\rm Ga}$ Conductor for Fusion Applications

2011
Previous studies on V 3 Ga assert its suitability for use in proposed fusion reactors. V 3 Ga may outperform Nb 3 Sn in a fusion reactor environment based on its relatively flat critical-current profile in the 15 T-20 T range, resilience to applied strain, and reduced risk of induced radioactivity. A multifilament powder-in-tube V 3 Ga conductor was designed, fabricated and tested with a focus on evaluating critical current versus applied field and applied strain performance, wire drawing difficulties, heat-treatment optimization, and overall feasibility of the concept.
