Cytodiagnosis of 367 cases of intra-abdominal malignancy in a 15- year period

2013
The fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has become an invaluable tool in the early investigative process for any swelling, palpable or deep-seated, with high rate of accuracy. The present study included all the intra-abdominal aspirations performed at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, Imphal over the last 15 years (1997 – 2011). Analysis was done with special reference to the malignant cases and histopathological correlation was made whenever available. The maximum number of malignant lesions belonged to liver when hepatocelluar carcinoma and secondaries are combined. The overall accuracy rate was 99.7 % and positive predictive value was 100 %.
