Self-Organizing Manufacturing: Current Status and Prospect for Industry 4.0

The changes of market, the shift of manufacturing paradigm, the evolution of devices, and the emergence of new technologies, require and drive manufacturing to be flexible, reconfigurable, adaptable, and efficient, whereas a manufacturing system becomes huge and complex. In order to overcome such challenges, self-organizing distributed manufacturing is imperative. For this need, first state of the art of self-organizing systems in manufacturing is surveyed. Then the approaches and mechanisms of self-organizing manufacturing systems are analyzed. Finally, based on the advances in ICT technologies such as big data, cyber-physical system, and proactive computing, a prospect of self-organizing manufacturing for Industry 4.0 is addressed.
