On the congruence transformation of a pencil of real symmetric matrices to a pencil with identical characteristic polynomial

Abstract Simultaneous nonorthogonal congruence transformations for pairs A , B of 2 × 2 real symmetric matrices which leave the characteristic polynomial of the pencil x 1 A + x 2 B invariant are studied.
