Metabolomics in psychiatry

2020
Abstract Metabolomics is a subcategory of the “omics,” related to metabolites in respect to endogenous and exogenous processes. Specifically, metabolomics holds promise in the field of psychiatry through informing personalized medicine. With the use of metabolomic measures, there is an opportunity to create an overall objective classification of psychiatric disorders that includes various neurobiological measures, in addition to the current behavioral methods. Potential areas of growth through metabolomics include disease diagnosis, treatment response, and drug discovery. Ultimately, while there have been advances in the application of metabolomics in psychiatry, more are required in order to introduce this technique fluidly into daily clinical practice.
