Improved electrochemical properties of P2 type layer electrode through extended diffusion path by using post-transition metal doping

Abstract Prismatic type layered oxides are suffering from structural transformation and john-teller effect issues during high voltage operation. In this work, we modulate the crystal structure of P2-Na0.66Ni0.33Mn0.67O2 via Aluminum (Al) doping. The Al substitution enhances the sodium ion diffusion pathway by enlarging the spacing between metal oxide layers. The high stable P2-type Na0.66Ni0.33Mn0.67-xAlxO2 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.11) was prepared via simple solid state reaction. The prepared cell was cycled between 1.5 and 4.5 V at 0.1C and attained an initial capacity delivery 184 mAh g−1.
