ElconocimientodelafaunadelDesiertodeVizcaíno: unaherramientadeconservación Knowledge of the vertebrate fauna of the Vizcaino Desert: a tool for conservation

The Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve (REBIVI, for its abbreviation in Spanish) located in Baja California Sur is the largest Protected Natural Area (PNA) in Mexico. Its environmental Heterogeneity offers the presence of outstanding species richness. In REBIVI, several achievements have been reached, such as regulation and virtual elimination of the illegal hunting and wildlife traffic. The most significant advances are the integration of the community in monitoring brigades, as well as in the issue of environmental education using as case study knowledge of vertebrate fauna and points of interest as a tool in nature tourism. It is a priority to link administration (CONANP), society, and academics to promote a culture of conservation and sustainable development to directly benefit the communities living in their own environment.
