Fabrication of Ni-Nb Amorphous Ribbon Reinforced AZ91 Magnesium Alloy Matrix Composites by Using Infiltration Casting Method

The composites of AZ91 magnesium alloy reinforced by Ni60Nb40 amorphous ribbon have been fabricated by melt infiltrating casting method. The volume fraction of Ni60-Nb40 is about 5%、10% respectively. An optical microscopy and a scanning electronic microscopy were used to investigate the structure of the composite and the microscopic morphologies of the fracture surface. The results show that the wetting behavior between Ni60-Nb40 amorphous ribbon and AZ91 magnesium alloy was beyond our expectation. The compression results show that the yielding strength of the composites is higher than that of the AZ91 magnesium alloy, but the extent of which is decreased with the increasing reinforcement. In the same time, the fracture modes varies for the Mg alloy with and without reinforcement, which was discussed according to stress-strain curves and fracture surface.
