Nuclear resonant inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation by icosahedral quasicrystal i-Al62Cu25.5Fe12.5 and tetragonal crystal ω-Al70Cu20Fe10

Abstract The local vibrational densities of states (VDOS) G ( E ) of Fe in icosahedral quasicrystal i-Al 62 Cu 25.5 Fe 12.5 and tetragonal crystal ω-Al 70 Cu 20 Fe 10 were measured at room temperature by using the 57 Fe nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation. We found a single-band structure at about 28 meV in both the Fe-partial G ( E ) for i-Al 62 Cu 25.5 Fe 12.5 and ω-Al 70 Cu 20 Fe 10 . The single-band of i-Al 62 Cu 25.5 Fe 12.5 quasicrystal is broader than that of the ω-Al 70 Cu 20 Fe 10 crystal. It contrasts with a strongly structured VDOS expected on theoretical grounds for the icosahedral quasicrystal. The VDOS are discussed in comparison with those obtained by inelastic cold neutron scattering.
