The Single Transferable Vote and the Alternative Vote Compared

AV has been implemented at Australian federal elections in two different contexts. Australia has a bicameral Parliament consisting of a House of Representatives that is elected at least every three years and has always utilized single-member constituencies and a Senate, the members of which serve staggered six-year terms, with half of the membership facing election every three years (except when the Senate is prematurely dissolved). All of the originally federating states are guaranteed equal Senate representation and have always constituted at-large multimember electorates.
