Study on Equine Histoplasmosis “Epizootic Lymphangitis”/Untersuchungen zur Pferde-Histoplasmose “Epizootische Lymphangitis”

Summary: A detailed clinical and mycological studies on horses' infection with Histoplasma farciminosum was conducted for the first time in the Middle East. The disease seems to prevail in an endemic form in the region. The course of the infection was carefully observed. In all of the studied cases the infection involved only the cutaneous lymphatics and skin tissue with extension to the regional draining lymph glands. The disease seems to impose a serious economic impact in the infected areas. Full description and thorough characterization of both the mycelial form and the yeast phase of the causative organism were made. Zusammenfassung: Ausfuhrliche klinische und mykologische Untersuchungen wurden zum erstenmal uber Pferde-Infektion mit Histoplasma farciminosum im Nahen Osten durchgefuhrt. Es scheint, das die Erkrankung in der Gegend endemisch auftritt. Der Verlauf der Infektion wurde sorgfaltig beobachtet. Bei allen untersuchten Fallen hatte die Infektion nur die Hautlymphgefase und das Hautgewebe unter Einbeziehung der regionalen Lymphknoten ergriffen. Die Krankheit stellt in den betroffenen Regionen eine ernsthafte wirtschaftliche Belastung dar. Sowohl die Myzelform wie auch die Hefephase des Erregers werden ausfuhrlich beschrieben und charakterisiert.
