Comprehensive effective-medium analysis for the transmission properties of combined metamaterials

Abstract We numerically study the transmission properties of a left-handed combined metamaterial. By changing the distance between continuous wires, different electromagnetic responses of the combined structure are observed, either to enhance the left-handed behavior or to make it disappear. Importantly, this expands the previous results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2003) 107402] to a complete transmission picture for combined structure, based on the correlation between electric and magnetic responses.
