Inhibitory effect of lilopristone on experimental endometriosis in rats

2001
AIM: To observe the inhibitory effect of lilopristone (Lil) on the growth of endometrial explants in rat model of endometriosis. METHODS: The model of endometriosis in rats was made by surgically autotransplanting endometrium to the peritoneum. After 3 wk, rats were laparotomized and the volumes of endometrial explants were measured. One week after second laparotomy, Lil 20, 80 mg•kg^(-1), mifepristone (Mif) 50 mg•kg^(-1) and solvent 4 mg•kg^(-1) were given intragastrically (ig) qd for 21 d. At the end of treatment the volumes of endometrial explants were measured again. The inhibitory rates of the drugs on the ectopic endometrium were calculated. RESULTS: In Lil 20, 80 mg•kg^(-1) and Mif 50 mg • kg^(-1) treated rats, the growth of endometrial explant was inhibited significantly (P<0.01), with inhibitory rates of (80±27)%, (88±22)% and (82±31)%, respectively. CONCLUSION: As Mif, Lil could inhibit the growth of ectopic endometrium in rat model of endometriosis.
