Clinical study of Acrysof Toric intraocular lens implantation for corneal astigmatism correction

2011
Objective To evaluate the result of TORIC intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in correcting corneal astigmatism and the rotation stability in cataract surgery.Method Randomized group 1 (37 eyes) from June 2009 to May 2010 and group 2 (35 eyes) in the same period underwent similar phacoemulsification procedure.Group 1 were combined with Acrysof Toric IOL (SN60TT) implantation of T3 (17 eyes),T4 (10 eyes) and T5 (10eyes).Group 2 with preoperative corneal astigmatism more than 1.00 diopter (D) were combined with Acrysof Natural IOL (SN60AT) and incision on steep axis.Patients were followed up for 3 months, the uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA),best corrected visual acuity (BCVA),residual cylinders, and TORIC IOL axis was measured.Result Three months after operation, the UCVA of all eyes in Group 1 were 0.65± 0.23; and were 0.55± 0.30 in Group 2,it was statistically significant (t =9.526,P <0.01).The BCVA in Group 1 were 0.81± 0.17,and were 0.79± 0.29in Group 2,there was no difference between two groups in BCVA (t =0.392,P >0.05).The mean residual astigmatism after surgery in Group 1 was (0.55± 0.17)D,and was (1.89± 0.35)D in Group 2,there was significant difference between two groups. The mean axis rotation of TORIC IOL was (2.5± 1.7) degree in group 1,and less than 5 degrees in 91.9%of eyes. Conclusions The SN60TT TORIC IOL show good effectiveness and stability in correcting pre-existing astigmatism in cataract patients.
