Conventional Method for Optimizing a Multiplexing System to Achieve a Reliable and Cost Effective Network

2008
This paper proposes a conventional method for optimizing a multiplexing system to establish a network that is both reliable and cost effective. Two candidate multiplexing systems are applied to such a network, the bandwidth-guaranteed multiplexing (BGM) system and the statistical multiplexing (SM) system. To clarify the reliability of the SM system, real traffic in a wide area network (WAN) is measured and confirmed to follow a normal distribution. We introduce an error-free condition into the system taking account the traffic characteristics and propose a method to clarify the application area for both multiplexing systems. Based on the method, the relationship among the network parameters such as the bandwidth assigned to the input/output channels, the traffic characteristics, and the number of multiplexed channels is evaluated. The results clarify the application area of the respective multiplexing systems.
