A deficiency of either folic acid or vitamin B 6 has an influence on the level of blood homocysteine, which is considered to be cause of embryonic malformations. In animal model experiments a 14-day, restrictive vitamin B 6 feeding causes a strong increase of the homocysteine level in blood. On the other hand, a deficiency of folic acid induces only a light increase of homocysteine. It is to assume that a deficiency of vitamin B 6 is neither negligible nor seldom cause of embryonic malformations due to wrong nutrition.
